Why We're Running
We are running onward towards a cure! We host this Indianapolis 5K to raise money to fight the ALS disease.
ALS has always been an important cause for Phi Delta Theta Indiana-Mu. We raise money for the LiveLikeLou Foundation, which was founded by a fellow brother, Neil, and is now run by his wife, Suzanne. Suzanne took over the operations of the Foundation when her husband passed away after being diagnosed with ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The diagnosis is 100% fatal. Once you get the diagnosis you generally live for two to five years. The disease affects the lives of 20,000 Americans each year. Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes someone loses their battle to this terrible disease. There is no therapy. There is no cure. Yet!
We are putting on the 2nd Annual Onward Phi Delta Theta Run/Walk 5k to help raise money for this foundation. The LiveLikeLou Foundation is a non-profit run completely by volunteers. The money this foundation raises goes directly to help fund research to find a cure for ALS, or to families directly impacted by an ALS diagnosis.
Where Does the Money Go
The money that we raise with this Indy 5K goes to the LiveLikeLou Foundation. . The LiveLikeLou Foundation was founded in 2015 by a Brother, Neil Alexander. Neil passed away in 2015 after being diagnosed with ALS. The foundation that he created has two main purposes.
- Fund research for a cure through grants
- Improve the quality of life of those diagnosed with ALS and their families
The Live Like Lou Foundation is a much smaller organization and because of that, they are able to give nearly all of the money they raise to help further their mission. The foundation is run 100% by volunteers so overhead is next to nothing. The foundation's current goal is to raise 4 million dollars in 1848 days. They chose this goal in honor of Lou Gehrig and the fraternity. The 4 is in reference to Lou's jersey number and the 1848 references the founding year of Phi Delta Theta.
What's Been Done
The Phi Delta Theta Fraternity has raised millions of dollars for ALS throughout their chapters. Indiana-Mu's first 5K in Indianapolis raised over $5,000. Other chapters hold philanthropy events, alumni club events, and Iron Phi Program events. Phi Delta Theta is committed to the ALS fight. The funds raised benefit ALS patients, their families, and research to find a cure through the LiveLikeLou Foundation.
There are lots of 5Ks in Indianapolis, please join us for our Indy 5K the Thursday before the IUPUI Regatta. You can register here, or if you are unable to make it you can still help make a difference by donating here. Thank you for your support in advance!
